An Ijazah in Quran is a traditional certification. A qualified teacher grants it to a student after hearing them recite the Quran correctly, confirming that the student may recite and teach as they were taught.
What Is a Sanad?
An Ijazah usually comes with a Sanad: the chain of teachers through which the recitation has been passed down, generation by generation. This chain is one of the ways the precise recitation of the Quran has been preserved.
Types of Ijazah
- Ijazah in recitation (from the Mushaf): reciting the whole Quran correctly while reading.
- Ijazah in memorization: reciting the whole Quran from memory.
- Ijazah in a specific Qira'ah: e.g. Hafs 'an 'Asim, or in multiple readings. See the 10 Qira'at.
- Ijazah in texts: such as the Jazariyyah or Tuhfat al-Atfal.

Recite the complete Quran to a certified teacher and earn an Ijazah with Sanad.

Can You Get an Ijazah Online?
Yes. Many qualified teachers grant Ijazah after full recitation over video. What matters is the teacher's own qualification and Sanad, and the student completing the full recitation to their satisfaction. Learn about our online Ijazah program.
